The Japanese company will be the first to make the feature standard on its new electric e-car range.

A large screen on the dashboard will display camera images. And the system will let drivers switch from normal to wide views.

Honda say the cameras will reduce blind spots by at least ten per cent.

A special water-repellent coating will be used to stop rain blocking vision.

German car firm Audi already offers the camera feature in its e-tron range as an optional extra.

Its screen is on the top corners of car doors. But Honda says its system retains a “clean and modern” design, with small camera pods hugging the doors.

And bosses say that compared to wing mirrors, the cameras reduce drag by 90 per cent improving the vehicle’s all-round efficiency.

A Honda spokesman said: “The e-compact electric car is a bold step for the brand in terms of design and technology and forms part of the strategy to feature electrified technology in all cars it sells in Europe by 2025.”
