ALL new Honda models will have electric or hybrid power from NEXT YEAR.
The plug-in push starts with the 2018 Honda CR-V which won’t even offer diesel as an option.
And it’ll continue across all European models led by a radical new city car revealed at the Frankfurt Motor Show.
The Urban EV Concept wowed crowds with its retro styling and dinky dimensions – a welcome break from the futuristic styling of most others cars at the show.
Honda bosses have promised to make the micro machine in 2019 as part of its electric vision.
Takahiro Hachigo, Honda President and CEO, said: “This is not some vision of the distant future; a production version of this car will be here in Europe in 2019.
“Here in Europe, we see this move towards electrification gathering pace at an even higher rate than elsewhere.”
The quirky concept – that looks like a 1970s Volkswagen Golf GTI – has the Honda badge backlit in blue.
This design feature will carry over onto all future Honda electric cars.
The Urban EV has old-fashioned white-washed multi-spoke wheels and traditional circular headlights.
Despite its looks there’s plenty of tech on-board including a message board on the front bumper that can display greetings or information.
Inside there’s bench style seating, a floating dashboard and a wraparound screen that extends into the doors.
Honda isn’t ditching petrol and diesel altogether, though, despite the Honda CR-V’s diesel free launch.
It’ll offer full plug-in models, hybrids and mild-hybrid systems – just like the similar Jaguar announcement last week.
Honda will have electrified its entire range in Europe and UK by 2025 – and globally the refresh will take until 2030.
